GM asks dealerships to close in an effort to avoid bankruptcy

Along with other concessions made by GM, the company has asked dealerships to close its doors to help the company avoid bankruptcy and prove to the government that it is and can be viable in the future.

GM wants to reduce the number of dealerships from 6,246 to 3,605 by 2010.

The announcement came along side the news that GM would be closing factories, laying off workers, cutting salaries for even high level salaried employees and getting rid of Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Pontiac brands.

I have to agree with one of our commenters this week, GM why did you get rid of Pontiac instead of Buick? I would have rather seen Buick and Cadillac become one brand. Then again, Pontiac and Chevy could have merged, that way we’re not losing some of Pontiac’s “unique” cars like the Solstice. That car isn’t so bad when compared to other GM cars.
