Billboards add novelty to the recession.

Billboards have been popping up around the country as part of a billboard campaign called “Recession 101.” They are funded by an anonymous East Coast donor who looked across the country and became very depressed about how people were reacting to the slumping economy. The donor wanted people to know that the country has been through a recession in the past, and will make it through this one.

The campaign, which began in June, now has more than 1,000 billboard across the country (including one on Times Square). In places that have been particularly hit hard by the recession, it can be hard to put a funny spin on the recession while people are losing their homes, but the overall reaction to the campaign has been positive.

The members of the Outdoor Advertising Agency of America have decided to donate space, as well as printing materials and labor for the campaign.

Here are some of the slogans that are on the billboards:

“Interesting fact about recessions … they end.”
“Self worth is greater than net worth.”
“This will end long before those who caused it are paroled.” <– This one is my favorite

Leonard Lardaro, an economist with the University of Rhode Island has said, “For people who are very capable and talented who lost their jobs, it wears away at you. It takes away your sense of worth, which it shouldn’t do. Don’t think in a recession that nothing good can or does happen.”

I don’t believe that I could end this post with a better sentiment myself.

With that, I’ll be back on Monday. I’m actually out today doing a bit of job hunting myself. So far, the hunt is unfruitful (even though I did have two people say they would call me back, I haven’t heard anything back from anyone).

Have a good weekend everyone!
