Microsoft has a lot riding on Windows 7

windows 7

On October 22nd, Microsoft will be releasing its newest operating system and everyone is waiting and hoping for the best. Windows 7 has been tested with mostly positive reviews, however a lot of people have low expectations following Microsoft’s release of Vista just a few years ago.

Roger Kay, an analyst and president of Endpoint Technologies Associates out of Wayland, Mass, said that the company’s reputation is reliant on the success of Windows 7.

Early reviews of the operating system have come out to be mostly positive. Wall Street Journal columnist Walter Mossberg even went as far as to say that Windows 7 is “the best version of Windows Microsoft has produced.”

It can’t be much worse than Vista. When Vista came out, it was plagued by hardware and software issues regarding compatibility. Because of these problems, many businesses avoided implementing Vista in their offices and Microsoft had to continue supporting XP to keep these customers happy. Hopefully with Windows 7, Microsoft can get these customers to switch over to the new system.

Of course Microsoft has a lot riding on the success of this operating system, but like I said before, many people have low expectations for it because in their opinions, anything is better than Vista. As a matter of fact, I still use XP on my laptops. Then again, I usually like to make sure that (when it comes to a computer operating system) other people have a chance to really make sure it works with everything before I upgrade or move to the new OS. Being an early adopter isn’t always the best thing to be and I’m glad that I didn’t upgrade to Vista when it came out and still haven’t. I’m not too sure that Vista would even work on my old laptop.

What do you think about Microsoft’s new operating system? Did you get a chance to test it out when the company opened up the testing to the public? Did it work with all of your gadgets and software?

  1. I’m still on xp, though they say that Vista has improved now. I haven’t tested out the new OS yet, but they say, or at least they advertised, that its faster than XP and should be backwards compatible.

I hope they have fully fixed most bugs on this one, or at least majority of the initial bugs. These days, businesses just pump out new products quickly just to see if the market would be interested or to gain market shares fast. They let consumers do the testing for them and just release a version 2.xxx to fix up blunders they could have fixed in the first place.

Remember the iPhone? The first one was just stunning in design, but features wise, I found it lacking. Then they release newer versions with all these new features that they could have implemented in the first phone. Well, this isn’t much a problem for software but if you’re a business, then you’ll need all the reliability you can get since you’re bottom line is at stake here.

I won’t jump on this one as soon as possible, I might give it a few months to see if it would perform as described. But I think MS will make a push to force XP users, and maybe even Vista users to upgrade by discontinuing support for XP.

  2. I’m running vista, myself and while I “loved” XP, I should say that again I love “XP” I am running vista, it has a few more bells and whistles but I found security wise it is better. The added security does slow it down and it hangs at certain times especially during recycling jobs and file moving tasks.

Windows 7 is said to be better but I’m with you I won’t be jumping on anytime soon, my current setup works just fine. Heck I would have run XP on my current laptop if it came installed with it, but it came with vista so I just decided to use it.
