Office Depot’s new marketing campaign targeted to Small Businesses focuses on Recession Aggression
Jennifer McClelland | RSS | 1 CommentIt’s not everyday that a large retailer comes out with a viral marketing campaign targeted at small businesses and their distaste for the current economic condition.
Office depot has tried to do this in a comical way with it’s “Survival of the Smartest” campaign. The website features two “small business owners” trying to tell other small business owners what they can do to help themselves out in the recession. They do it in a fairly comedic way. They have short videos about fake products to help relieve some of the stress associated with running a small business in a recession. The funniest in my opinion is the “Recession Aggression” bag. Of course, it’s all just a way to plug Office Depot products, but at least the company is finding a humorous and different way of doing it rather than just throwing a commercial in your face.
In the ad, as seen above, the announcers offer a new product that is basically a bean bag chair with the word “recession” on it. They announce many different ways to take out the aggression you feel toward the recession out on the bag. Some of the methods of taking out your aggression include:
Throw it over a bridge
Run over it with your car
Put it in a headlock
Kick it
As you can see, it just goes on and on.

The Recession Aggression bag is one of the funniest viral ads I’ve seen yet! At nearly two minutes, I thought the video might be a bit too long to keep people interested, but I definitely watched the entire video.
It’s wonderful because it creates interest in a comedic way, then asks a real question and provides a real solution (their website promotion). Brilliant, indeed!
