The Pitch – What is the proper prison sentence for Madoff?
Jennifer McClelland | RSS | 1 Comment
How long should Bernard Madoff spend in jail?
Question:
Bernard Madoff’s attorney just sent a letter to the judge in the case who will be sentencing Madoff asking that he receive 12 years in prison because his life expectancy is only 13 years.
How long do you think he should stay in jail?
Answer:
I think that if he could pay back all those investors, then 12 years is fine. However, some of those who lost all their money have since committed suicide and if they’re dead, then they can’t be repaid.
Now, I understand that anytime you invest in the stock market it is a gamble, however, there is a big difference between a gamble and having your money flat out stolen. At least with a gamble, you have a chance.

I don’t pretend to know what should be done with him. He committed a major crime and so should be treated as the criminal he is. However, if all of the investors could be paid back, should he be treated in the same way as a serial killer? Even if he does manage to repay all those who lost, if I were them I’d want some sort of punishment, as I wouldn’t feel like anything negative had come out of the whole ordeal for him. However, if I were a family member or friend of one of those who committed suicide then I would regard him as a murderer, and want him to be treated as such.
