You're right that the quality of VoIP still isn't there. I still use it though as it saves me a fair bit each month. You say that a lot of people are switching to cell phones as their main phone now, but that's more expensive, so if people are worried about the cost surely they'd just stick to a landline.

I would like to chime in and add one more option for those considering reducing their costs.

Why not go with a prepaid cell phone?

In recent months we have seen prepaid carriers begin to offer various options that rival contract services from major cell phone providers.

Tmobile prepaid cell phone packages include the pay per day plan which is 1 dollar per day access fee, charged only on days you call someone. You get unlimited night minutes, starting at 7, unlimited mobile to mobile minutes and 10 cents per minute during the day.

For many people who pay monthly for a land line, this represents a huge savings to them both in the short term and long run.

Prepaid cell phones are also a great way to enforce a strict budget by limiting the billable calls to one top up and making you consciously decide if you want to pay more to get more minutes.

Just my two cents =)
