Facebook has been operating in the red since the beginning of the company just a handful of years ago. Today it was reported that the company is finally beginning to have profitable operations and that according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company is now cash flow positive and has been since the second quarter.

From the Facebook Blog as posted by Zuckerberg:

“We’re also succeeding at building Facebook in a sustainable way. Earlier this year, we said we expected to be cash flow positive sometime in 2010, and I’m pleased to share that we achieved this milestone last quarter. This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term.

Over time, Facebook will continue to be as strong as all of the connections you make. We’ll continue building new and better things to make connecting with the people you care about as easy and rewarding as possible. We thank all of you for helping us reach the point where we are connecting 300 million people, and we hope to serve you and many more people in increasingly deep and innovative ways in the months and years ahead.”

In a previous release from Facebook, the company was not expected to be cash flow positive until sometime in 2010, so seeing profits in the second quarter 2009 is a welcomed surprise.

Facebook also boasts more than 300 million users all across the world.

The Superbowl this year will feature ads from fan favorites like Budweiser as well as questionable newcomers like Cash4Gold (yea, the same that advertises on late night cable).

Today, NBC said that it had sold all 69 ad spots for tomorrow’s “big game” for a record $206 million. The ads this year sold for between $2.4 and $3 million for a 30 second spot.

If you are more interested in the ads than you are the game and you’d rather not spend the 4 hours in front of the TV waiting for commercials, you can catch them online at NBC.com and Hulu.com after the game.

In a show of solidarity behind the President-elect, Congress voted for infusing the financial system with the remaining $350 billion just two days after Obama asked them to.

From the AP:

Congress laid the foundation for President-elect Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan on Thursday with remarkable speed, clearing the way for a new infusion of bailout cash for the financial industry while majority Democrats proposed spending increases and tax cuts totaling a whopping $825 billion.

Obama has said that he wants the rest of the bailout money to go to troubled mortgages and “main street” like he promised in his campaign.

It turns out that some of the executives for bailed out financial companies are still getting those “oh so coveted” bonuses. $1.6 billion dollars in bonuses that not only include cash compensation, but also stock options, personal use of company jets and chauffeurs, home security, country club memberships and professional money management. If only we could all have professional money management services, perhaps the economic problem we’re having now wouldn’t exist.

When I was reading about this on other blogs, a comment said that you shouldn’t blame someone for working hard and being rewarded well for it…not to criticize the executives for compensating themselves with such lavish rewards. I think that is a giant load of hooey. These executives should only be rewarded if they have actually done well, and in my opinion, having to take tax payer dollars to keep their business afloat is NOT doing well.

Chevy Chase Bank, a Bethesda, MD based bank will be bought out by Capital One. Capital One will buy the bank for $520 million in cash and stock.

Capital One says it expects cumulative losses from the acquisition, but the purchase of the bank will give Capital One a greater presence in the Washington D.C. area. That could also help those in need of loans because Captial One would be able to lend more at a less expensive rate.

I have read a lot of articles online saying that the number one way to keep your life “recession proof” is to live within your means. This means to live comfortably, as long as you can afford it with “cash-in-hand”. However, I find that this is common sense and sometimes people need more than this as a guideline.

How many times do we need to be told not to max out our credit cards, after the fact? I’m a 5th year senior, of course my credit isn’t as great as it would be if I was a graduate and paying off my student loans…I have to live with my decisions in these hard financial times, and when I graduate (sometime this summer) I have to go out and find a job that will cover my expenses, or hopefully (at least) cover my loan payments.

I have lived within my means, but at the same time, I will graduate college with a large amount of debt.

I guess I’m just tired of every time I go to Yahoo it tells me that I should live within my means when I know I have such a large debt facing me.

I read an article over at Yahoo today that said more people are using old fashioned cash instead of credit cards for everyday purchases. In my opinion, maybe some people should carry cash to keep them from spending more than they wanted to, maxing out credit cards, or even getting some harsh overdraft fees from the bank…

At the same time, I don’t carry cash, I can’t carry cash. When I have any cash on me (more than $20) I don’t feel safe. And if someone were to take my cash from me, there is no way to get it back…there is no protection associated with cash, unlike credit cards or most Visa or MasterCard backed debit cards, which can get your money back if your card is stolen or a charge shows up that can be disputed.

If you are going to be using cash for now, be careful, because there are stories coming out about how customers aren’t using cards anymore and I’m sure this will lead to some unsavory behavior by some members of society.

Goldman Sachs CEO, Lloyd Blankfein, and six other executives will not be receiving stock or cash bonuses this year.

Surprisingly enough, the decision was made by the seven executives themselves because they feel like it was the right thing to do.

This is the most responsible thing I’ve heard from the financial sector in the last three months, AT LEAST. This will also help Goldman Sachs not have a backlash like other financial companies and banks whose executives continue to accept millions of dollars of bonuses.

People are always asking me which stock to buy, or which sector is hot right now for them to jump into. Questions like that usually make me laugh a little to myself, because even though investing is in part about what is “hot”(an investment must increase in value to benefit you), it is mainly value in relation to what people are paying for something now versus what they might pay for it later.

For the most part I put people on a safe path towards a desired yearly return with an acceptable risk level based on their comfort level and financial goals. However, I am constantly reminding people that investing is about profiting, so why are they limiting themselves to just one market. Everyone knows something: a hobby, a trade, a skill, a way of life. However, not many people have the confidence to pursue this type of investment. Alternative as it might be, sometimes the best investment for people is not the stock market, but in a carefully laid out investment in themselves.

It’s no secret that one of the most profitable investments is starting a business. There’s an old saying “Those with wealth invest, those with knowledge create.” People usually find themselves on either end of the spectrum, some even in the middle. The point is, why are you not investing in one of the best vehicles for your dollar?

The sad fact is that most people either do not have the drive to motivate themselves to start a business or lack the knowledge in the field of business they wish to enter. True, starting a business can be a daunting task, capable of sucking away most of your time. Estimates range that a new business owner’s weekly workload can average around 50-70hrs, leaving little time for social events or anything else that is not properly time managed correctly. This leads to the fact that 80% of new businesses fail within their first year of operation.

If 80% of new businesses fail in their first year, then why is it a good investment? Simple, one net worth can grow tax deferred (or tax free in some cases) a multiple of times within a very short period of time. It’s like picking a stock at $1, and having it go to $20, but you’re in control of how high it can go. Most businesses fail due to poor planning, time constraints, or even a business owner trying to tackle everything on their own and not having enough time to effectively handle even one part of their business correctly. Stress, financial strain, legal matters, taxes, employees, are among other things that can bog down a business in the beginning.

With most investments, more reward means more risk, but with a business, the risk is usually limited because you control it. You decide each move, each play, and as such control the outcome of your investment return; the trade off is that you must make each decision not someone else. With a business, you are trading the ability to make more by correctly leveraging off of yourself and other people (employees), versus making a limited or lesser amount by “correctly” selecting the best company to “invest” in. Too often people have gotten burned in the market because even though they did the correct due diligence on a company and found a sound investment, the market “reacted” differently than what made fundamental sense. The end result is a loss when you should have had a win. With a business, you decide, because the health (net worth) of your business is directly related to the fundamental factors affecting it, not by the rapid selling of trust funds, or liquidating board’s members with enormous option packages to cash in.

Just remember that if done correctly, starting a new business can become a well oil-machine. Providing a continual net worth increase and making your every dream become a reality, being only limited by our drive and imagination. The wealth that can be ascertained with a business is comparable by few other investments making it a worthwhile venture to consider.

In an economic downturn, most of us have to tighten our belts in order to pay the bills on time and make sure all the necessities of life are met. Living on the cheap does not necessarily mean that you have to do without, but do differently.

Frugality means spending smarter and becoming creative with the ways you shop. When utilizing all resources available, dollars can be stretched further and wallets have a bit more cushion.

The first step to frugal (and green) living can be summed up in an old and simple clich?: ?Waste not, want not.? Recycling not only can benefit your bottom line, it benefits the planet. Several different brands of lunch meat are packaged in reusable plastic containers. In my household, we now reuse these containers for leftovers. This way we don?t have to buy Rubbermaid or Ziploc containers. The other great part about these containers is they feature a plastic recycling number on the bottom so when the container has served its purpose, it can be recycled at a proper facility.

Recycling aluminum cans may not offer a large amount of money per pound (around $0.77) but something is better than nothing. Over three months, I can accumulate enough for around $20. That is $20 I would not have otherwise had. Some states offer cash back from deposits on glass bottles.

On the side of greener living, saving energy can save you money. Change the light bulbs to CFL?s. They use a quarter of the energy a regular light bulb does. Also, in the warm summer months, try to use a microwave or toaster oven in place of the regular oven, especially during the heat of the day. The heat from the oven can raise the temperature of the house by 2-5 degrees, making your air conditioner work harder.

Rising food costs add to the strain on our wallets. Every nightly news cast seems to mention that inflation is up and food costs are through the roof. The easiest way to stretch a dollar at the grocery store is coupons. The Sunday news paper is a great place to get plenty of coupons, but it is not the only place to find the discounts. There are now ample online resources for coupons (ex. http://couponmom.com/ ). After all that coupon clipping, to get the most out of the coupons, try to find a grocery store that doubles coupons (and find out up to how much they double them). Some grocery stores even triple coupons on certain days, which can lead to serious savings on items you may have purchased anyway.

Another tip that has personally helped me save hundreds of dollars: Purchasing second hand items does not mean that it has to look like second hand items. EBay is a great resource for used items (many in excellent, very good used condition, or even new but without tags). I recently purchased a pair of $70 jeans on eBay for $10 (shipping included). They were never worn, but were missing tags. As far as clothes shopping goes, make sure you know your measurements so you get clothes that fit. Getting such a great deal on clothes online isn?t a rare occurrence. I purchased a second pair less than a week later for $8 shipped. I understand that eBay isn?t for everyone. If that is the case, then local thrift stores also offer second hand clothes for significant discounts. Most weekends, no matter where you live, yard and garage sales can be found and deals are everywhere. Regardless of which option is for you, remember, you will have to dig around a bit for a great deal.

I believe the key to living frugally is cutting costs. Over time, the pennies and dollars you save add up and can help with things you are saving for. With a little practice anyone can become affluent in frugality.

The global central banks as well as the U.S Federal Reserve, attempted to pour hard cash into the markets today to ease the current credit crisis. While this had a short term rally on US Indexes(nearly everything ended up across the board today), consumers and investors alike still remain wary of any uncertainly that might come up in regards to the current financial health surrounding WaMu. With the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep key interest rates at 2% yesterday watch keen investors to watch the markets like hawks going into this weekend.

With many professionals calling a bottom today, casual investors should now be investing for the long haul and not the quick rally. As always pigs get slaughtered and right now all the streets look red.

Every night I watch the news…and every night they say credit cards are bad. But, are credit cards bad?

Well, as long as you are being responsible with your spending and paying off the balance, not just the insane interest rates, credit cards offer several benefits.

First, it helps you build a credit history and improve your credit score. Both of those things are important. Poor credit can make your insurance go up (auto and home owner’s) and can even keep you from getting a job. Employers are looking at credit scores now and having a low score could keep you from getting a job or even a promotion.

Second, credit cards offer a lot more protection than a large wad of cash. If your wallet is stolen, all you have to do is call a number and go through a process and all of the money is restored. If you do a lot of online shopping, they are necessary, not only for the ability to purchase items online, but also for the protection they offer.

Also, some credit cards offer rewards that you would not otherwise get. I don’t spend a lot of money on my credit card, but I have built up enough rewards to get a CD or something, but it is a CD I would otherwise not have.
