More good news for “low cost” airlines – AirTran posts 1Q profit
Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Wed, Apr 22 2009 | 6 CommentsBig news today from AirTran Holdings (parent company of AirTran Airways): Today the company posted its first ever first quarter profit. This came after the company made an announcement saying it would be profitable through every quarter in 2009.
The reported net income for AirTran was $28.7 million. When compared to a net LOSS of $34.8 million in the first quarter 2008, the company is doing much better.
AirTran CEO Bob Fornaro said “Our ability to report a profit today is rooted in the difficult decisions we made last year. AirTran Airways was among the first airlines to react to the changing economic environment and we are among the first to show signs of recovery.”
This news comes after Southwest Airlines (another low cost carrier) posted a loss, but continues its hiring practices.
Here’s a message to Delta, perhaps if you follow the methods of these low cost carriers (like not charging for the first checked bag) then maybe you won’t have to cut every single corner to pull a profit.

Tulsa, OK named best place to live in the U.S.
Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Tue, Apr 21 2009 | 0 CommentsTulsa, Oklahoma secured the top spot in the “America’s Top 100 places to live 2009″ poll for the RelocateAmerica.com Poll. The website offers relocating information for American families.
The Top Ten is rounded out by Pittsburgh; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Huntsville, Ala.; Houston; Albuquerque, N.M.; Lexington, Ky..; Little Rock, Ark.; and Oklahoma City.
RelocateAmerica.com determines the winners by evaluating nominations and interviewing local leaders and residents on topics such as the region’s economic environment, educational opportunities, crime, employment and housing data.
“With the increasing concern on our nation’s economy and recovering housing market, we approached this year’s list with a different lens than in previous years. We concentrated on the outlook for future growth and ability to rebound in the communities that we selected,” said Steve Nickerson, president and CEO.
“We looked at the local government and the business leadership in each community as we considered this year’s winners. We selected communities with visionary leaders, improving or thriving economies including housing and realization of ‘green’ initiatives.”
RelocateAmerica is operated by trueV New Media, which is based on Brighton, Mich.
Dallas and Fort Worth, while trying very hard to get the top spot, have been hurt by the current global economic crisis and have found themselves fending for any left overs from other cities and towns that are gathering up the people displaced by the economic crisis.

Is the Wealth Gap Growing? Well yes.
Chris McClelland | RSS | Thu, Oct 23 2008 | 0 CommentsStudies are showing up that the wealth gap is starting to become and more separated not only in America but America in relation to other countries as well. In America I’m sure people can feel it here without me saying much about it. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “The rich keep getting richer, while the poor keep getting poorer.”.
All one has to do is look at the headlines floating around Warren Buffet’s net worth increased by over 8 billion dollars while Bill Gates net worth went down, even in this economic environment. CEO brass are still making a killing and are being paid what it takes the average worker of the same company nearly 78 years to make almost twice as long as it took in the 70’s.
I didn’t even get to gas companies, recording record profits in the last couple of quarters. Yes plenty of people are experiencing the American dream, the problem is very few of us are doing so. Life is good at the top, everybody knows that, that’s why people work to get there. I don’t believe people are normally content at being stuck at the bottom of the financial totem pole. It’s just sometimes things happen to people and life doesn’t end up the way that they had hoped for.
I don’t think anyone needed a study to tell us that a lot of us are feeling less off than many of our other high net worth American citizens.
