Burger King and the fight over the $1 burger

After franchisees vetoed a proposal to offer the double cheeseburger on the menu for $1, Burger King’s corporate headquarters will be mailing out customers coupons through August and September to get the burger at the reduced cost.

The drop in price was designed to lure customers away from the dollar menu at McDonald’s and into Burger King. As everyone knows, McDonald’s is the champion of cheap, $1 hamburgers, especially double cheeseburgers. However, yesterday the news broke that franchisees had vetoed the price and corporate had to do something to try to appease everyone.

The burger usually costs $2 or more in most areas, the $1 price was only intended to be temporary.

The coupons will be sent out to nearly 80 million households across the country and will be included in a coupon booklet with nearly $50 in savings to each booklet. Those customers will have 60 days to redeem the coupons.

In a statement, the company said it “remains fully focused on its value offerings and delivering value for the money to its guests,” adding that “many product and menu options are always in development and under consideration.”

The statement didn’t mention that the burger is being sold for $1 in some markets already.

I say, just stick with the $1 Whopper Jr. and throw some cheese on it for free. From a strictly marketing point of view, I believe that promoting fast food starting in August and September is a great way to drum up some business because people get particularly health conscious in the summer when they’re trying to look good at the beach, but they tend to be a bit more relaxed (overall) in the Fall and Winter months.

McDonalds rolls out new $4 Angus burgers

Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Wed, Jul 01 2009 | 2 Comments

In an apparent attempt to compete with sit-down style restaurants that sell hamburgers around the $9-$10 range McDonald’s will be introducing a new line of hamburgers.

The hamburgers McDonald’s will be made of Angus beef and be priced around $4 each and the launch is said to be on Thursday. The burgers will be 1/3 pound of Angus beef. They will come in three “flavors” a deluxe burger with pickles and tomatoes, a mushroom burger with mushrooms, and a bacon cheese burger. As of right now, they are a limited sell, only said to be sold at U.S. locations for the next few months.

The burgers have been in the “testing” phase for a few years and have been held back from a nationwide release only because McDonald’s sees them as expensive compared to other menu offerings. The ironic part of that statement is that they rolled out the “premium” chicken sandwiches which are definitely around the $4 mark and sell very well in all parts of the country.

Another “best seller” at McDonald’s are the McCafe drinks, which are supposed to compete with Starbucks offerings. They are coffee drinks that range from $1.50 to $3. I know that I was able to get an iced vanilla latte with skim milk and sugar free vanilla syrup for around $2 about a week ago, and while I still prefer Starbucks, without a Starbucks close to me it wasn’t a bad alternative. Who would imagine that there wouldn’t be a stand-alone Starbucks in a college town?

Anyway, McDonald’s will surely roll out a huge advertising campaign with the release of the new burger. In my opinion, its ads are very convincing because I am not a fan of McDonald’s food and I actually rarely go, but I did try one of the coffee drinks after a barrage of commercials told me I wanted it (haha) and the Big Mac commercials end up always making me want a Big Mac (even though I haven’t had one in years, I’m not a fan of McDonald’s hamburgers at all).

Let Them Eat Tomatoes! – FDA

Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Thu, Jul 24 2008 | 0 Comments

The FDA basically gave up the search for the culprits of the salmonella outbreak…well, the search for the tomatoes anyway. Most of the outbreaks were caused by tomato products, but most of them had something in common, cilantro and jalapenos. Yep, salsa and pico de gallo…The FDA is currently looking into peppers being imported from Mexico.

So, go out and have tomatoes, eat them to your heart’s content. They’re OK!

This is a good time to say this…Remember kids, wash your fruits and veggies before you eat or cook with them. It may not get rid of everything but it may get rid of something that will really be unpleasant later. Salmonella poisoning is not fun. If you look up the symptoms…you’ll quickly realize it is worth it to wash your produce. Also, cook your beef and chicken until it’s done. Don’t eat rare hamburgers.
