Wal-Mart is getting in on the prepaid craze. With AT&T offering a unlimited talk and text plan for $60 per month, someone had to come around and step up their game.

Wal-Mart is starting up it’s own “Straight Talk” service that will ride off of TracFone’s service. The service starts at just $30 per month and a user can get unlimited talk, text AND DATA for $45 per month.

The service goes on sale starting October 18th. It will offer not only nationwide coverage, but it will also offer unlimited 411 usage.

Of course, like most other prepaid carriers, the phone options will be quite limited. You won’t see any cutting edge phones avaiable for purchase on any of these types of services. That probably has something to do with how cheap the plans plus data are. If everyone had an iPhone or another more advanced phone on the plan, then it would eat data and Wal-Mart would likely be losing money. However, with the not-as-advanced phones, these are great options for text-happy teenagers.

With prepaid plans like these popping up, I can definitely see post paid plans taking a hit. These aren’t just regional plans, they are nationwide plans with great coverage. For example AT&T is one of the only carriers that have coverage at my parent’s house in rural Mississippi. I was completely in the dark when I had T-Mobile and went to visit them.

I would like to see more competition with post-paid plans because that’s where the more desirable phones are. That’s what I’m after in the end…I want good coverage and a great phone for a reasonable price. That’s why I’m with Sprint. The price really overcame the company’s phone selection and the coverage is awesome when compared to the T-Mobile phone I had previously.

Would you switch from your post paid plan to a prepaid plan to get in on the deals? How about you prepaid plan people…How do you like your service? How much does a more advanced phone matter to you?

Working in construction or having a job that requires physical labor is though and it can be equally tough on your clothes. No one wants to have to spend a lot of money every month or so on new clothes because their work clothes wear out. Luckily, you can find name brands like Carhartt and Dickies online and for reasonable prices.

When it comes to construction gear, work gloves are absolutely necessary and actually work gloves are really great for things like making snow balls in the winter time. Cotton gloves tend to get wet when you’re trying to make snow balls and when your hands are wet, you aren’t happy.

Overalls are something else that may not be absolutely crucial, but they are a big part of work clothing for some areas. Overalls can be handy to keep your pants up (are you paying attention, plumbers? This could help you guys get rid of the stereotype and you can look a bit more like Mario).

At the Construction Gear website, you can find all of the great brands that you have come to know and enjoy for their quality. You can also find pretty good prices and every single item that you may have wanted or needed for your work attire (unless you’re in an office, then you probably don’t want to be wearing work boots and overalls…You won’t find Seersucker here).

Question:

Being environmentally conscious is something that I have talked about more than a time or two on this blog. What are some of the ways that you’re doing your part to help the earth?

Answer:

Personally, I should be doing more, but the things I have done are putting CFL lights in my house, recycling plastics, not purchasing plastics that can’t be recycled whenever possible, reusing containers from restaurants rather than just throwing them away, driving less, and using less electricity whenever I can.

Another thing I do, because it can be a hassle to recycle every single plastic bag I get from the store is, if I forget my reusable bags, I will not get a plastic bag, especially if it is just a couple of items.

Have an idea or want us to use your pitch in the next issue? Then, make a submission on The Pitch Page.

A disruption in the refinery of crude oil into gasoline due to a fire in a Los Angeles area refinery couldn’t even raise the price of oil and gasoline. For the first time in two months the price of a gallon of gas has fallen below $2.50 on average. Where I live, I just paid $2.38 for a gallon of regular 87 octane.

The fire at the Tesoro refinery in LA will probably effect the price of gas in California, but not too much anywhere else. The refinery processed around 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day and produced gasoline, jet fuel, and other products.

Demand for gasoline is so low that according to analyst and trader Stephen Schork, “a material disruption to supply to one of the largest markets in the world barely registered with speculators on the NYMEX.”

Wholesale gasoline for October actually increased 1.2 cents to $1.6323 per gallon today while benchmark crude for November delivery increased nearly 50 cents to $66.51 per barrel, this is after increasing 13 cents on Friday.

Prices have actually been increasing ever since Iran announced that it had a secret nuclear program at the G20 summit last week. This is due to the fact that 20 percent of the crude oil in the world is trafficked through the Straits of Hormuz which is on the southern coast of Iran. If something were to actually happen between the United States (or any country) and Iran, that route would be compromised and oil would likely spike.

Of course, oil is one of the indicators of the economy. There are so many indicators and this is definitely one of them. After all, it’s oil that took a dive when people started realizing how bad the economy was last year. Oil also has started creeping back up and analysts are saying that other things are creeping up as well; such as the sale of homes and autos.

While it would be a good thing to not have to see oil reach the outrageous prices it hit last summer, I really want the economy to start picking up soon. Perhaps when it comes time for Chris and I to leave our college town, I’ll be able to land a real marketing job somewhere.

This morning I woke up and it was cool outside and the sun was shining. It is a beautiful late September day. After opening the windows in my house, I sat down to start writing today’s posts and realized something: Toys R Us has published the list of hot toys for the holiday season already.

This comes before Halloween and even before the costumes for the holiday have really started to sell.

It makes sense to me why a retailer would want you to be aware of the hot toys this year after the dismal sales that they have seen throughout the year.

I suppose the retailer has to do something to let parents know that the holiday season is just around the corner and that their kids will soon be asking for some of the toys on the list.

Surprisingly, most of the things on the list are quite inexpensive this year. One toy that I’ve noticed is already pretty hot is the Zhu Zhu Hamster pet. Those things are about $10 at Wal-Mart and Toys R Us and they’re already sold out every time I have gone looking for them.

Here is the list of toys that are going to be the big sellers (Toys R Us calls it the Fabulous 15):

BAKUGAN® BATTLE BRAWLERS™ NEW VESTROIA™ Maxus Helios™ 7 in 1 from Spin Master®
ChixOs™ Pink Design-A-Luxury Loft from Spin Master® Color Me a Song™ from Crayola Beginnings™
Disney Netpal from ASUS
Disney•Pixar Toy Story Interactive Buddies Talking Action Figures (Buzz and Woody) from Thinkway®
Disney Princess: Just One Kiss Princess Tiana Doll from Mattel®
Fast Lane JLX OVER DRIVE™ RADIO CONTROL ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE from Toys”R”Us
Laugh & Learn™ Learning Farm from Fisher-Price®
Little Mommy™ Baby Ah-Choo™ from Fisher-Price®
Mindflex™ from Mattel®
NERF N-Strike® Raider Rapid Fire CS-35™ from Hasbro®
Star Wars Fan’s Choice Anniversary Edition Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser from LEGO®
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN CONSTRUCTICON DEVASTATOR from Hasbro®
Wii Sports Resort™ from Nintendo®

Being anywhere in the world outside the United States does not mean that you have to go without comparison shopping. There are sites for those in Australia that not only can you, as a shopper, compare prices on things like laptops and shoes, but as an advertiser, you can use pay per click advertising as a way to get more sales through the site.

MyShopping.Com.AU is a site where you can do any of these things. Comparison shopping will always be important to the thrifty consumer. I’m sure that there are plenty of people in Australia who would like to know where to get the best deals on items in their own country. Websites like the one linked provides the right kind of opportunities for shoppers to not only save time, but money to find items that they are looking for when they go shopping.

In the United States a comparable site would likely be something like MySimon. You know, I don’t even know if my simon is still around, but if it is, that is the site that would compare. I enjoy using a single website to find all the information I’m looking for in one place. The worst parts of sites like Shop.com is the spam and just junk that I usually find. I wish there were a way to avoid that.

Going through portfolio’s of respected investors is another way of generating ideas.
Alright, so speaking from a quite personal experience, I was wondering when all you thought that it would be okay to file an insurance claim. The other day, Chris and I were at the grocery store when we realized that the car next to ours had hit the side hard enough to leave a dent in the side of the car. I, of course, was quite angry (because this is my car ). We filed a police report and I called State Farm about the dent and they said that if I took it to a repair shop it would be $200 due to uninsured motorists and they would cover the rest.

That’s all fine, but I know who damaged my car and I would really like for them to pay the deductible, not me! When it comes to parking lot accidents it seems like it is so easy to get away with damaging someone else’s car. In this case, my car was dented and the other car (no matter if I got their license plate number or not) got away with it without having to pay the uninsured motorist’s deductible.

I just hate that some thug-wannabes were able to scam my insurance company like that. I have told my insurance company about the car that I am SURE did this and they said that because there wasn’t enough “proof” they couldn’t do anything about it. That is complete and utter BS!!

I will promise something to the people who dented my car; If I EVER see your car again, I will do something to your car to where you will KNOW I spotted it and noticed it hanging out in a parking lot where I already was. Revenge is a … well you know.

Have you paid for a warehouse club shopping card? Do you feel as though you are treated poorly when you are at the store? Well, you’re not alone. Here are some things from Smart Money that warehouse stores may inform you of but not implicitly TELL you when you sign up for your cards en masse.

1. Now that you’ve paid for your dues, it’s time to get in line. Haha! Now they have you and your cart full of groceries, you have to wait in line for those in front of you who have cases upon cases of mountain dew and Pepsi.

2. You should probably have some kind of construction wear to shop at this store. This means that on more than one occasion, shoppers to warehouse stores have had merchandise fall on their heads while they were trying to shop.

3. Don’t sign up for our credit cards, seriously. A credit card from one of these warehouse stores will eat away at your account with an interest rate of 23.15% APR on average. If you have a Sam’s card, your phone will ring and ring with offers from GE money. I find this one kind of funny because I have a Sam’s card and also am offered a credit card every time I shop at the store, but have never been called and offered the credit card.

4. We got you with our sparkly jewelry, hook, line, and sinker! Jewelry from a warehouse store is too good to be true. I don’t know what kind of lights they use to make those gems sparkle, but even my five year old engagement ring sparkles under those lights…if only they would follow us at all times, right? Anyway, most of the times when they say the diamonds will appraise higher than retail they won’t.

5. You will leave when we tell you to leave. Here’s where it gets tricky…I have only ever had a Sam’s club card and every time my husband and I have gone to leave a Sam’s Club, we have been stopped at the front door for the person to “check” everything in our cart. Are they really able to check what we have purchased? Probably not, but if that is what makes their day complete, than who am I to get in the way of that? There are many people out there who feel as though it is their right not to have to show their reciept to the “checker” at the door and in the eyes of the law; they are right.

However, you can be banned from the warehouse store if you completely ignore the rules of the store, including having your receipt checked by the checker at the door.

I have a warehouse club card (Sam’s Club) due to the fact that is what my parent’s give Chris and me for Christmas. The card is one of those things that we look forward to every year even though we barely use it throughout.

Sometimes we all have to make the decision as to what is more important: Our time or our money. A lot of times these two don’t exactly go hand-in-hand. As a matter of fact, the examples I will give will only talk about choosing one or the other.

Saving money has gotten extremely important to those who have lost their jobs or who have suffered through a reduction in income since the beginning of the recession. One of the best examples I can give as to a trade off between time and money is supper time in most households.

Cooking supper at home will typically save you money in opposition to going out to eat, however going and picking something up will always be more of a time saver. Say you’re on your way home from work and you call your local [insert restaurant name here] and pick it up; you’re going to spend more money than if you would have cooked all the food at home, but you now just get to pick up the food and take it home to your hungry, waiting family. After they finish eating, the garbage gets recycled or thrown away and there isn’t any mess to clean up (or if there is, it is usually minimal if your kids didn’t get into a huge food fight or something during dinner time).

Time and money also come into play when you’re thinking about things such as thrifty shopping. Many shoppers who are out there shopping to save money will visit many different stores and spend a lot of time clipping coupons just to save money. Time conscious shoppers are more willing to shop at the same store for everything, or just venture to a couple of grocery stores.

For anyone the answer will likely be different. Some will feel as though their time is more valuable than the savings they will get from shopping at different stores and spending time clipping coupons while others will feel as though their money is more valuable than the time they spend doing all the things that save them money.

As for me, I find myself in the middle (as I imagine most would). I won’t go out of my way to save $1 on groceries, but I will shop at different stores if it means I can use my favorite coupons. I also try not to go out to eat too often, not for the cost but simply for the nutritional value or lack there of. I really enjoy saving money, but I also value my time.

What do you do? Are you a time saver or a money saver? Or do you fall somewhere in the middle?

SmartMoney recently posted an article about ways to cut costs moving. The article titled “Moving on the Cheap: 6 Tips for Cutting Costs” is really helpful to anyone moving or looking to move in the future.

You can pay anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 to have your stuff moved from one place to another, so it is important to try to cut costs anywhere you can.

So first off, do some comparison shopping. Moving costs can vary greatly depending on what moving company your talking to. For that reason, it is important to get estimates from at least three companies before you decide on one. Websites like CityMove.com lets potential customers ask for bids that moving companies can respond to.

Of course, if you go back to a post on this site a few days ago, hiring a company based on price alone is a really bad idea. The moving companies are full of fraud and you really need to do your research before you hire a company to entrust all your things to. So doing a check on the background of the company you’re thinking about hiring is tip number 2.

Tip number three is to get rid of things you don’t want anymore. You will always have stuff around your house you won’t use once you’ve moved, so have a garage sale or something to get rid of it! The less stuff you have, the less it will likely cost you to move it.

Tip number four goes along with tip number three and that’s to make sure that your reduce the amount of times a mover has to go in and out of your house. I know that sounds kind of weird, but if you think about it, it really does make a lot of sense. If you reduce the amount of times a mover has to enter and exit your house, you will likely end up reducing you overall bill for the move.

Tip number five is to know what is covered by the insurance. If you’re moving and the insurance doesn’t cover something that is priceless to you, then it will be worthless in the long run. You need to make sure a dollar amount is placed on everything and that it is covered under all circumstances. In the case of moving, I don’t think that you can ever have too much insurance.

Finally, tip number six is to take advantage of a tax break being offered by the government! Right now, the IRS is allowing people who are moving to deduct the costs for a job-related move. All you have to do is move within a year of starting a new job and keeping that job for at least 39 weeks after you move. Also, the job must be at least 50 miles away from where your current job is.

When I woke up this morning, I wondered if, as a society, we are overly medicated. I wondered because I woke up with an awful sinus headache, the kind I cannot shake unless I take a couple ibuprofen and an allergy pill (my choice today was Allegra).

It can be argued that modern medicine has led to great things such as people living to be 90 and older which was once simply unheard of also, children being able to fight off cancer (which was also unheard of). It can also be argued that modern medicine has led to the failure of natural selection.

It just seems like, overall, we have a pill for everything. If you watch the national news in the evening, it is very obvious that there are too many medications. There are so many that they have started to combine medicines. If you look, there are at least a dozen different kinds of drugs for something as common as heartburn.

When is the last time you walked into the drugstore and actually looked at all the different pain relief medicines? How about allergy medications? After Chris caught a cold last week, I literally spend half an hour looking at different cold remedies when I just gave up and bought DayQuil.

Pharmaceuticals is a HUGE business. Just look at this list. It’s outrageous when you start to look at all the money we spend yearly on medication. I don’t believe that we’ll all be walking around in a drug induced stupor anytime soon, but maybe we shouldn’t run to the medicine cabinet whenever something hurts or we should start looking for more natural remedies for common problems like headaches, allergies, and upset stomachs.

Again, this is all just something I was thinking about this morning when I woke up. It is a little bit of a scatterbrained idea, but when I realized I was fumbling around for the same drugs I run to every time I get a sinus headache I stopped and thought about my mindless actions.

Could you go without a car?

Question:
I’m sure the answer will be “I already do” or simply “Yes” if you live in a big city, but what about the suburbs or even rural areas? Could you go without a car?

Could you go without a car?

Question:

I’m sure the answer will be “I already do” or simply “Yes” if you live in a big city, but what about the suburbs or even rural areas? Could you go without a car?

Answer:

Ha. This one is pretty funny, after all, there was one point in time when cars didn’t exist. However, I have been without a car at one point in time and it was quite difficult to find a ride from place to place for the months I was without a car. I suppose what was even worse was being able to look at my car and know that I couldn’t use it (in the summer of 2006 my car was in the shop all summer and I wrecked it in September 2007).

Living in the “suburbs” of a small(er) city makes it extremely difficult to go without a car. I live 6 miles from the city and there aren’t any bicycle paths to get to and from the city, just a two lane highway (oh, the joys of living in Mississippi). There is a public transit system, but only within city limits.

Have an idea or want us to use your pitch in the next issue? Then, make a submission on The Pitch Page.

Today’s featured e-book download is Google’s Success (1.43 MB, 31 pg) – While other companies were busy cramming the most ads possible on their homepages or squeezing every last hour of productivity out of employees, Google created an enjoyable experience for every party involved in the company including users, employees, and investors. Google’s success has come as a direct result of keeping people happy.

What you can learn from this booklet

Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, met by chance on a Stanford University tour in the summer of 1995. Page, at the time, was working on a PhD research project involving the mathematical properties of the link structure on the internet. The research project, “BackRub”, used an algorithm to follow the links in a webpage and analyze all the connections. The PageRank algorithm generated a popularity index for each web page based on the quantity and quality of incoming links. By 1998 Google’s web crawler had indexed 60 million URLs and the company had been formally incorporated.

In the next few years Google became the gateway to the internet for the masses, as well as a traffic director that could make or break a company with its search rankings. Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Earth demonstrated the company’s aspiration to move beyond simple web queries, and its ability to merge playfulness with unparalleled functionality.

While other companies were busy cramming more motion ads on their homepages and squeezing every last hour of productivity out of employees, Google created an enjoyable experience for every party involved, including users, employees, and investors. Google’s success has come as a direct result of keeping people happy.

Today’s featured ebook download is Top 20 Brokers for Individual Investors (1.30 MB, 29 pg) – Today, the brokerage industry truly has something to offer every customer. Yet, choosing the right broker from the more than 100 (according to Yahoo!) online discount brokers is often frustrating and confusing. Over the past few years, the financial media have written many articles about online investing, but they seem to stop short of an investor’s goal: Finding the best broker for you.

What you can learn from this ebook

We’ve spent a lot of time cruising the websites of brokerage companies and we sympathize with you wholeheartedly. Many of the websites just don’t flow in a logical manner. Some are short and sweet, packed with great information about the company’s products and services. Others spend many pages saying virtually nothing that will help an investor make a decision about which broker is right for him. And one discovery we did make-from the number of pages we had to search to summarize the cost of doing business with them was that the majority of brokerage sites really want you to work hard to ferret out their commissions and fees!

In this report, we have selected 20 firms that offer an array of products for investors at any experience level, several of whom offer both Web-based and software-based trading.

Bernard Madoff got exactly what he deserved when the judge in his case sentenced him to 150 years maximum today.

However, some will also say that he was the fall guy for a scheme that included his closest associated and family. Ruth Madoff, Bernard’s wife, will get $2.5 million in a settlement she made with the Justice Department. That money isn’t clear yet because she is still facing charges from the SEC, the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, and those who are liquidating Bernard’s business and estate.

She will likely be putting the money in an investment portfolio, earning around 3% over inflation a year. If she wants to make sure that she doesn’t outlive her money, she will need to only spend around $125k a year to last her until she is 100.

That’s more than the average person makes a year, however she will have to participate in something that she may not want to: downsizing.

All those houses, cars, and other extravagant items will have to be cut and done away with. I’m sure that she would be able to make a little bit of money from the sale of some of those things. If she wanted, she could also bring in some rental income by renting out her house in Florida or the penthouse in Manhattan. If it were me, I’d live in Florida due to the cost of living being so much higher in Manhattan. Then again, if I were in the same situation, I would want to sell both and move somewhere completely different simply because of the fact that I would be afraid my neighbors (many of whom were swindled by her husband) would try to burn my house down. Then again, these assets may be liquidated sometime in the future by those looking to recover some of the money.

Overall, while she’s probably accustomed to spending $2.5 million over the course of a few months, I believe that the Justice Department was too nice and lenient in the settlement. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who feel the same way. After all, she’s getting more than those who have nothing thanks to the ponzi scheme her husband ran.

Last week, Jobs announced that he would be going on a six month medical leave. Speculation about his health ranges from his pancreatic cancer has returned to he needs a transplant due to complications from the treatment of the cancer.

Investors are angry because Jobs’ appearance has not been consistent with what was being disclosed and when his health condition was finally disclosed, stock prices dropped 7% in one day.

Steve Jobs has said time and time again that his health is just fine and he will remain the CEO of Apple, but today he announced that he will be taking a medical leave because his health is worse than he has been saying.

Apple’s shares seem to be tied to Jobs’ health concerns also, today shares fell 7%. Shares of the company have been volitile with rumors of his health in the past.

So, what would happen to shares of the company if Jobs were to leave or, worse, pass away? I think it’s time for him to start phasing someone else into the role of CEO. Apple investors need someone new to help keep the stock at a steady level.

Named after Charles K. Ponzi, Ponzi schemes have had a very prominent place in the headlines in the last few weeks thanks to the Bernard Madoff scheme. A Ponzi scheme is defined as an investment swindle in which high profits are promised from fictitious sources and early investors are paid off with funds raised from later ones. (answers.com)

So what’s the difference between a Ponzi scheme and a Pyramid scheme? From Wikipedia:

A multilevel pyramid scheme is a form of fraud similar in some ways to a Ponzi scheme, relying as it does on a disbelief in financial reality, including the hope of an extremely high rate of return. However, several characteristics distinguish these schemes from Ponzi schemes:

* In a Ponzi scheme, the schemer acts as a “hub” for the victims, interacting with all of them directly. In a multilevel scheme, those who recruit additional participants benefit directly (in fact, failure to recruit typically means no investment return).
* A Ponzi scheme claims to rely on some esoteric investment approach, insider connections, etc., and often attracts well-to-do investors; multilevel schemes explicitly claim that new money will be the source of payout for the initial investments.
* A multilevel scheme is bound to collapse a lot faster, due to the necessity of exponential increases in participant

Santa brought a little gift to investors on Christmas eve; an end to the five day losing streak in the market.

Christmas Eve is a quiet trading day on Wall Street, but it was enough to increase the Dow Jones Industrial average by half a point. Companies like Delta benefited as oil prices fell further to under $38 a barrel. Large retailers Wal-Mart and Target also did well as last minute shoppers packed their stores.

It wasn’t exactly the “Santa Claus” rally of some people’s dreams, but it was an end to the 5 day slump.

Despite the fact OPEC announced a 2.2 million per day drop in oil production yesterday, oil traded around $36 a barrel today. The last time oil closed so low as July 2004.

This just proves further that OPEC needs to listen to what analysts are saying instead of thinking “short term.” The cut in production let everyone know just how low the global demand for oil has gotten.

U.S. oil supplies were also up 500,000 barrels, which is four times more than investors were anticipating.

Banks are still failing, investors are losing thousands (if not more), families are still losing their homes. So how was the bailout supposed to help?

We, as United States taxpayers, have funded companies with $700 billion. It is OUR loan to THEM. However, the economy is still sub-par and there are no investments that we can put our money in for safety with the guarantee of even a tiny profit.

Short run T-bills have 0% interest rate. From what I’ve learned in my managerial finance class, when the T-bills is at 0% that means the risk free rate of interest on an investment is 0% and anything above that (such as on a corporate bond) included a default and market risk premium. (To me) that means any coupon rate on a bond (corporate, municipal, etc) is all risk…

The point I’m trying to make is that the bailout was supposed to help the economy…so when will that happen. There are thousands, if not millions, who are losing their retirement funds in the market. When will they be bailed out?

President-elect Barack Obama said that the economy is likely to get worse before it gets better, and so he wants the new Congress to pass a quick economic stimulus bill and also pledged help for the troubled U.S. automakers.

During the press conference, the Dow’s 300 point gain slipped to around 200. The reason given for the slip was that investors wanted more information about the “economic stimulus bill” that Obama brought up. The Dow eventually regained the points, and then some.
