Retail numbers were positive for October

Upbeat shoppers led to an increase in retail stores’ increase in sales for October. Some say that the shoppers were enticed by signs of an improving economy and getting a head start on holiday shopping.

Retail numbers were up across the board; with stores like Costco doing well as well as designer brands. The stores that did the best were Costco Wholesale (which operates T.J. Maxx as well as Marshalls), Saks, and Nordstrom. One of the stores that one would think would do well when consumers go back to spending would be Wal-Mart, but the store doesn’t issue monthly sales reports anymore so finding out how it did simply isn’t possible. The next report from it will be the fourth quarter report, which will not only tell about October’s sales but also November and December.

According to MSNBC, the reason that business was up for October had something to do with the cool weather and people’s need for cold weather clothes. Early holiday discounts also brought in the shoppers and it seemed like people were a bit less reluctant to purchase items.

Sales figures are up from October 2008. However, when looking at October 2008’s sales figures, consumer spending simply dropped off. With a bit more optimism about the economy, there is more spending now than there was then, and it will likely continue through the holiday season if the economic conditions continue to improve.

It’s Christmas in July time again

Can you believe there are only 160 shopping days left until Christmas? Retailers can, and they’re trying to take advantage of not only the low shopping season, but they’re also trying to make some consumers conscious of this and bribe the bargain shoppers into the stores.

Christmas in July promotions are in full swing, especially after retailers in the United States posted 10 straight months of declines in sales. Big chain retailers like Sears and Toys R Us are both holding the Christmas-esque sales promotions prior to back-to-school promotions.

The back to back sales is just another way to try to drum up some sales while many retailers are trying to keep their heads above water.

Sears, who started its sale last week, “decked the halls” in around 1/3 of its stores (including its website). Promotions on winter wear and porcelain collectibles strongly contrasts the sale of flip flops and shorts.

While Sears may not be bringing out the lights and Christmas trees for sale just yet, the Christmas cheer is spreading early to stores like the Hobby Lobby, where you can now find aisles of tree trimmings and decorations throughout the store. Your mileage may vary on this very early occurrence, but it is happening.

While exact expectations for the promotions have not been disclosed, many assume that Sears and Toys R Us are looking for success that is similar to Nordstrom, who has an annual sale in July that features discounts on winter wear. The Nordstrom sale has become so popular that the company’s sales are as high in the second quarter as in the fourth; and its biggest day of the year (as far as sales are concerned) is the first day of the sale.

I personally think the idea of having a Christmas in July sale is a bit hokey. If you want a reason to have a sale, just call it a super sale or something. Then again, I think that some people become numb to all the sales that are going on and tune a lot of it out. Think Macy’s and it’s “One day sale.” I always hear about the Macy’s sale and never go because the One Day Sale is the same as what is always on sale anyway, in my opinion anyway.

Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Sat, Apr 18 2009 | 0 Comments

Accused of enabling peer to peer file sharing of copyrighted material, the founders of The Pirate Bay (a bit torrent search website) have been sentenced by Swedish Judge Thomas Nordstrom. Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartolm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi and Car Lundstrom were sentenced to one year in jail and have to pay $4.5 million to Sony Music Entertainment, Columbia Pictures and Warner Brothers.

There were 23 music files four movies and one tv show selected for the lawsuit.

“It’s so bizarre that we were convicted at all and it’s even more bizarre that we were [convicted] as a team,” Sunde, told the BBC. “We can’t pay and we wouldn’t pay. Even if I had the money I would rather burn everything I owned, and I wouldn’t even give them the ashes.”

The men plan on appealing the decision.

The days of the $300 jeans are gone??

Jennifer McClelland | RSS | Mon, Jan 19 2009 | 0 Comments

In an article from MSNBC, retailers were discussing how consumer spending has changed since the economy has suffered over the past year. One retailer’s (Rock & Republic) founder and creative director, Michael Ball, said that the days of $300 jeans were over.

At the same time he was talking about how he had to lower prices on the ridiculously priced cotton pants…he said he created a new “inexpensive” line that fell in the $130 area.

$130 for a pair of jeans is not inexpensive or even practical. The most annoying part is that he is calling it is being referred to as the “Recession Collection.”

This is from the article:

The Recession line, to be offered at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue, will be sold alongside the premium denim collection.

But Ball plans to end the Recession Collection when the economy recovers. For now, he believes he’s doing his part to keep the economy rolling and help shoppers “open their pocketbooks.” - AP
