What you can learn from this ebook

You’ve probably heard about it in the news.

It may even have happened to someone you know.

The FBI calls identity theft one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States and estimates that 500,000 to 700,000 Americans become identity theft victims each year.

Identity theft is a federal crime. It occurs when one person’s identification (which can include name, social security number, or any account number) is used or transferred by another person for unlawful activities.

This booklet is designed to help you understand what identity theft is, how it happens, how to protect yourself, and what steps to take if your identity is stolen.

The consequences of identity theft can be staggering. Victims spend extensive time closing bad accounts, opening new ones, and fixing credit records. There can be high out-of-pocket expenses related to clearing your name. You could be denied loans and jobs — and, though unlikely, you could even be mistakenly arrested as a result of crimes committed in your name.

  1. ID theft happened to my parents recently, although the case was strange. People were actually putting money INTO their account (money from criminal activities to be laundered presumable).

  2. All of us should know what identity theft or fraud is. Mainly because it represents a real danger nowadays and can leave us with no money in our accounts without realizing it and without being able to recover them.

  3. That is strange Simon, for some people that wouldn’t be considered a crime to them but kinda of like hitting the lottery. Although I know that it is no laughing matter it is strange that they would be putting money “into” someone’s account rather than taking it out of it.

  4. We all need to really understand the issue of identity theft not only that we avoid being part of it unknowingly but also avoid being the victim of it. The case of identity theft had been rising like that of intellectual property theft. Thought the stakes are not the same, there need to be some serious action taken on the same not only at government level but also at personal level in order to minimize these kind of activities.

  5. It’s also a crime that people don’t think about until it happens to them. We all lock our doors but how many of us shred our bank account statements?

  6. Surprisingly a lot of people don’t shred their bank statements and other important things like credit card application forms. I always tear everything I throw away into pieces(my parents got me into this habit), even if the document is not important I do it out of habit.
