What did Tiger Woods give up (and get in return) for quitting the golf game?

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is arguably the most famous person to ever play the sport of golf. There aren’t many other players that I can name and I’m not a golf-watcher. Chris can’t think of anyone else either. So, what exactly did Tiger Woods give up by quitting the game to focus on his marriage?

First of all, he gave up the money. Tiger Woods was makingĀ  a killing playing golf. In 2008, he was the highest earning professional athlete; earning more than any NFL or NBA player, Tiger brought in $110 million for 2008 alone. He made his money not only from winning tournaments but also from endorsement deals. His face is so recognizable that he has had endorsement deals from General Motors, Titleist, General Mills, American Express, Accenture and Nike, Inc. (of course, many of these companies dropped him after his affairs went public).

Secondly, Tiger is giving up his job. Without golf, he is just basically another unemployed American. Then again, he has plenty of money to keep himself and his family in their plush Orlando area neighborhood. After all, he was the first athlete to hit $1 billion in total career earnings this year.

At the same time, by quitting golf it is easy to see how much his family means to him. It looks like he really wants to try to save his marriage (but who wants to save their marriage when they have a nearly 3 year affair?).

I suppose this, like all the other big news of the year, will fade over the coming weeks. I am already tired of seeing it every single time I turn on the television or open my internet browser. I think we get it…Tiger Woods cheated on his wife and now he’s quitting golf.

  1. I don’t believe Tiger Woods is giving up anything except a mistress. He’s making the dramatic move to “quit”golf (laugh) which is just a way to take attention away from his atrocious moral transgression and on to a sacrificial (read “benevolent”) act in order to save face.

It’s a PR move to put himself in the best possible light. What else could he do, act as if nothing had happened to the golden boy of golf?

He’ll be back playing golf as soon as everyone’s 5 second twitter attention span is back onto watching reruns of Sex in the City or Desperate Housewives or whatever braindead Americans are watching these days.

  2. It’s just sad that Tiger Woods would actually quit playing golf. He had been so good in it and now he has to end the game. Maybe he just can’t do it the way he did it before. Perhaps something to do with his knee or other matters concerned. Anyway, he should have thought about the consequences of his actions even before he started cheating on his wife.
